MISSION:

The mission of Collegiate Peaks Forum Series is to facilitate the intellectual enrichment of the Upper Arkansas Valley residents and their visitors by sponsoring events featuring nationally recognized persons schooled in philosophy, religion or science and hosting other community discussion activities.




VISION:

The Collegiate Peaks Forum Series is a bridge facilitating personal enrichment and constructive dialogue among individuals and groups to which they belong. It seeks to stimulate intellectual curiosity, stir the imagination and engage our diverse citizenry through lectures, study and discussion groups. It is committed to communicating with integrity, listening openly and honoring the differences of its participants. It envisions that a deeper awareness of all aspects of the Creator and available spiritual resources will emerge, that superior structures of thought and understanding will develop and that more effective models of personal and community action will occur.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

About Us - Board of Directors & Committees

 

Jamie Hagen, 2012 President, 2010 - 2003 to current Design Artists - Board member since 2008 -

Jamie Hagen has over 25 years experience in management, brand development, marketing, graphic design, and purchasing in the specialty coffee and food industry. For 6 years Ms. Utendorf-Hagen held a Board of Directors position on the Specialty Coffee Association of America (a national & international membership of 2,500) and was honored with The Specialty Coffee Association of America's "2004 Outstanding Contributions to the Association" award.  In 2001, she founded her own consulting company Creative Concepts working with clients in Italy, Holland, Mexico and throughout the United States.

In May of 2001, Jamie moved to Buena Vista, Colorado and met her husband, Hal Hagen, the founder of Aquatic Alternatives. She created Aquatic Alternatives and Collegiate Peaks Forum Series brand identities, as well as, working with various local clients.  Recently Jamie has become a partner in Alpenöl, LLC creating its brand identity and jointly working in sales with Managing Partner, Doug Mackay. Jamie is also a Board member of the Chaffee County Alliance for Domestic Abuse.  Hal & Jamie Hagen have four, combined family, children and two grandchildren. 

Robert Hartzell, 2011 Vice President, Board member since 2010

Bob Hartzell grew up in Minnesota, earned his Bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University, served two years in the U.S. Army, and taught high school business classes for two years prior to moving to Leadville, Colorado, in 1970. Bob came to Colorado to ski and paid for his skiing by teaching at Lake County (Leadville) High School for three years. He then worked a year in the Climax Molybdenum Mine and a half dozen years in the ski business. He then worked in a variety of capacities at Colorado Mountain College from 1979 to 2004 when he retired.

Bob then returned to the ski business as a powder guide for the Chicago Ridge Snowcat Tour operation at Ski Cooper. Since January of 2008, he has served as the Executive Director of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. Bob has been married to Barbara Kay Hartzell for 32 years and they have three sons, a daughter-in-law and one granddaughter. 

Butch Butler, 2011 Secretary/Treasurer, 2010 Treasurer, 2009 Secretary/Treasurer, President 2007 and 2008, Board member since 2003 –

Butch received a B.S. in Natural Resources (with an emphasis in geology) from the University of Rhode Island in 1975 and an M.S. in Exploration Geophysics from Stanford University in 1977. He started his career in Denver with Amoco Production Company, and worked for a number of oil & gas companies until 1994, when he moved to Chaffee County, Colorado.

Butch has been an active volunteer in the professional oil & gas community and received the Presidents Award from the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists in 2002 and Honorary Membership in the Denver Geophysical Society in 2003 for his work initiating and chairing the "Denver Prospect Fair & TechnoFest," a Rocky Mountain oil industry gathering of prospect generators, software developers, service companies, and data vendors. He also serves on the Stanford Petroleum Investments Committee, a volunteer alumni group that manages a portfolio of oil & gas investments held by the University, and was Chairman of this committee in 2004.

Long active in the community, Butch is a member of the Buena Vista United Church of Christ, is on the board of directors of the Walden Chamber Music Society of Colorado, and is a founder and on the Board of the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series.

Rebecca Kemper Poos, Board member since 2010 -

Rebecca Kemper Poos came to Buena Vista in the Spring of 2009 from Castle Rock, Colorado. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Religious Studies at Linfield College, followed by a Master of Divinity at the Vancouver School of Theology in British Columbia.

Rebecca is the Pastor of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Buena Vista. She has served a number of churches in Oregon, Vancouver, BC and Colorado, in all aspects of ministry. She has also been involved in a number of UCC and community organizations and looks forward to serving on the CPFS Board.

Rebecca, her husband Clarke, and son Rocky (14) enjoy a number of outdoor passions. They enjoy hiking, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing, kayaking, exploring Colorado history, and riding bicycles, their motorcycle or horses. The family is rounded-out by Clarke's kids in Florida and numerous pets.

My family and I moved to Buena Vista, Colorado in March of 2009 from Castle Rock, CO. I have worked in the resort industry most of my life; in sales, marketing and management.  As well, I have been involved with Rotary, other service organizations, and am on the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce Board.

I do consulting work with small businesses through my company, Springboard Strategies; and also work part-time for Murdoch's and the cottonwood Hot Springs.  I am delighted to live in a smaller town with strong community spirit and incredible recreational opportunities.  I hope to contribute to the work of the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series by bringing fresh eyes and creative ideas to this essential community resource.

Jack Saunders, Board member since 2011

Jack is an active skier, hiker, bicyclist and swimmer. He enjoys these activties with his wife Cindy and three daughters. He has a BA SUNY Albany.  Jack is President, of Saunders company, Inc. a home builder since 1979.  In his business efforts he is a NAHB Member/Builder 20 Club Member and a Member of the Summit County Builders Association.  On the community level he was a Lake County Commissioner from 1989 to 1993, and a School Board Member from 1977 to 1985 and 1999 to 2005.  He has also contributed on the FCX Community Partnership Panel, the CMC Advisory Committees and the Colorado Workforce Development Council.

John Cogswell, 2006 President CPFS

John M. Cogswell, a fifth generation Colorado native, was born in the San Luis Valley, raised on a ranch in Western Kansas, graduated from Yale University and Georgetown Law Center, worked for Senator Robert Dole, spent three years in the Marine Corps, was twice an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate, and has practiced law in Colorado for 38 years. He is currently a lawyer, legal reformer and revolutionary in most disciplines. John is now active in The Cottonwood Meadows development project in Chaffee County. John is one of the original founders and has been on the Board of the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series since its beginning.

Phil Jones, 2005 President CPFS

Mr. Jones was one of the original founders of the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series and served as its President for the first three years (2003-2005).  He was instrumental in the selection of many of the first lecturers and in writing the Local Societies Initiative grant awarded by the Metanexus Foundation to the Collegiate Peaks Forum Series. 

In his business career, Mr. Jones was the founder and President of Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Company, a successful chain of 125 retail coffee stores located in the eastern United States.  He was active in the international coffee industry, serving on the board and as a past President of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), Chair of the SCAA’s International Relations Committee, and Chair of the First World Specialty Coffee Conference in Venice, Italy.  After his coffee career, Mr. Jones moved to Buena Vista, Colorado where he was the developer of The Reserve at Cottonwood Creek subdivision.

Before becoming a successful business entrepreneur, Mr. Jones was an ordained Presbyterian minister.  He earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Georgia.

Owen Lentz, 2009 Vice President - Board member since 2005

Brigadier General Owen Lentz grew up on a farm in Kansas and a ranch in Oklahoma. He is an Air Force Academy graduate with a master's degree in international affairs from Georgetown University and has also completed all Ph.D. course work and exams in policy studies at M.I.T. General Lentz received the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. He retired as Director of Intelligence for the Space Commands and NORAD in Colorado Springs where he served during the first Persian Gulf War against Iraq. He also served for over eight years in diplomatic and senior intelligence positions in Europe, and has taught at the Air War College, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Air Force Academy. After retiring from the Air Force, he served over seven years at a Christian social ministry in Colorado Springs that helped meet the needs of struggling families and the homeless. General Lentz and his wife Kathy moved to Buena Vista in 2004, where he is engaged in research and writing about the employment of air and ground forces by the United States in major wars from World War I on, and how that experience compares to the sizing of U.S. forces between wars.
